Common early warning signs include: changes in urination patterns, swelling in ankles and feet, fatigue, skin rashes, nausea, and high blood pressure. However, kidney disease often shows no symptoms in its early stages, which is why regular check-ups are crucial, especially for those with risk factors like diabetes or hypertension.
Illegal mining operations release toxic heavy metals like mercury and cyanide into water sources. These substances can cause severe kidney damage when consumed through contaminated water or food. Long-term exposure to these toxins can lead to chronic kidney disease and other serious health issues.
Key preventive measures include: maintaining a healthy blood pressure, controlling blood sugar levels, staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet low in salt, regular exercise, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol intake, and getting regular check-ups. Those in mining areas should also ensure their water source is properly filtered.
Treatment options include medication, dietary changes, and renal replacement therapy (dialysis or transplantation). Currently, dialysis services are available in major cities, though access is limited in rural areas. One of our conference goals is to establish more dialysis centers, starting with Tarkwa in the Western Region.
