The Purpose NephroGhana Conference 2026

Ghana has witnessed a steady rise in cases of chronic kidney disease (CKD), with many linked to:

  • Rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, and obesity;
  • Long-term exposure to heavy metals such as mercury and cyanide from illegal mining activities ("galamsey");
  • Limited access to dialysis and renal care facilities, particularly in regions such as the Western Region.

Tarkwa, a mining-dominated municipality, has been particularly affected by environmental pollution leading to kidney-related health crises. Yet, the region currently lacks a dialysis center a critical gap this initiative seeks to address

Goals of this Conference

1. Promote awareness of the environmental and lifestyle causes of kidney disease in Ghana.
2. Raise funds to:
• Support the national kidney health advocacy campaign through GhanaWeb Health.
• Establish the first dialysis center in Tarkwa, Western Region.
3. Foster collaboration between health, mining, and environmental sectors for integrated kidney health solutions.
4. Strengthen Ghana’s position as a regional hub for nephrology education and research.

Expected Outcome

• Heightened national awareness of kidney health risks from environmental exposure;
• Policy recommendations for integrating kidney health into environmental regulation;
• Driving initiatives toward the establishment of dialysis centers in underserved regions; and
• Establishment of a Kidney Health Fund for advocacy and dialysis center development
• Formation of a National Nephrology and Environmental Health Network (NNEHN)
