The Purpose NephroGhana Conference 2026
Ghana has witnessed a steady rise in cases of chronic kidney disease (CKD), with many linked to:
- Rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, and obesity;
- Long-term exposure to heavy metals such as mercury and cyanide from illegal mining activities ("galamsey");

Limited access to dialysis and renal care facilities, particularly in regions such as the Western Region.
Tarkwa, a mining-dominated municipality, has been particularly affected by environmental pollution leading to kidney-related health crises. Yet, the region currently lacks a dialysis center a critical gap this initiative seeks to address
Goals of this Conference
Expected Outcome
• Heightened national awareness of kidney health risks from environmental exposure;
• Policy recommendations for integrating kidney health into environmental regulation;
• Driving initiatives toward the establishment of dialysis centers in underserved regions; and
• Establishment of a Kidney Health Fund for advocacy and dialysis center development
• Formation of a National Nephrology and Environmental Health Network (NNEHN)
